Believers are a Minor Group

The Majority

It is widely claimed in Islam that the true believers are the group in majority. This idea is found within the hadiths, where Prophet Muhammad allegedly said that the group of Muslims in majority is the correct belief.

It is estimated that over 85% of all Muslims are within the Sunni sect, so from this claim it appears that that the Sunni Muslims are the true believers, whilst all other sects within Islam are false.

However, by studying the verses of the Quran it is clear God proves to be in total opposition to this claim. This belief violates countless verses in the Quran. The believers are in fact are a minor group that are not in majority.

Contrary to the main belief in Islam, God speaks of those who are in majority, that they follow only conjecture and guesswork:

If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of GOD. They follow only conjecture; they only guess.

~ Quran 6:116

Again, most of the people on earth follow nothing but conjecture and guesswork:

Most of them follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth. God is fully aware of everything they do.

~ Quran 10:36

Verse 12:106 below confirms that the majority who believe in God go on to pollute their belief by committing idol worship.

The majority of those who believe in God do not do so without committing idol worship.

~ Quran 12:106

We see this today, where the majority of Christians idolise Jesus and the majority of Muslims idolise Muhammad and their religious scholars, therefore they cannot be counted as true believers.

From the context of verses 6:116, 10:36 and 12:106 it is clear that there is no limit to specific groups, such as only the Christian's, but rather it is a generalisation out of all the people.

In verse 7:48 we learn that the major groups are sent to Hell.

The dwellers of the Purgatory will call on people they recognize by their looks, saying, "Your great numbers did not avail you in any way, nor did your arrogance.

~ Quran 7:48

It is only the disbelievers who claim that they are in majority:

When our revelations are recited to them, clearly, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of us is more prosperous? Which of us is in the majority?"

~ Quran 19:73

In verse 12:8 God provides us with an example, that the majority think the minority are astray, when it is the minority of people that are in fact believers.

In Joseph and his brothers there are lessons for the seekers. They said, "Joseph and his brother are favored by our father, and we are in the majority. Indeed, our father is far astray."

~ Quran 12:7-8

A definite share of God's worshippers will in fact follow Satan:

GOD has condemned him, and he (Satan) said, "I will surely recruit a definite share of Your worshipers.

~ Quran 4:118

Most People Will Not Believe

In verse 36:7 we learn that it is God's predetermined decision that nearly all the people do not believe:

It has been predetermined that most of them do not believe.

~ Quran 36:7

Most is defined as almost all.

Most people, no matter what you do, will not believe.

~ Quran 12:103

Verse 30:30 confirms that almost all the people do not know God's perfect religion, which is strict monotheism and worship of Him alone.

Therefore, you shall devote yourself to the religion of strict monotheism. Such is the natural instinct placed into the people by GOD. Such creation of GOD will never change. This is the perfect religion, but most people do not know.

~ Quran 30:30

In verse 13:1 we learn that most people will prove disbelief in the Quran.

A. L. M. R. These (letters) are proofs of this scripture. What is revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.

~ Quran 13:1

Most people insist upon disbelieving:

We have cited for the people in this Quran all kinds of examples, but most people insist upon disbelieving.

~ Quran 17:89

As for those who are given solid proof from their Lord, reported by a witness from Him, and before it, the book of Moses has set a precedent and a mercy, they will surely believe. As for those who disbelieve among the various groups, Hell is awaiting them. Do not harbor any doubt; this is the truth from your Lord, but most people disbelieve.

~ Quran 11:17

Most of them do not know how to make use of their final chance on earth.

We did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, just to play. We created them for a specific purpose, but most of them do not know.

~ Quran 44:38-39

When speaking about all the people, God informs us that:

  • Most people do not believe; 26:67, 26:103, 26:121, 26:139, 26:158, 26:174, 26:190

  • Most of them are disbelievers; 2:100, 11:17, 12:103, 13:1, 26:8, 36:7

  • Most of them follow nothing but conjecture; 10:36

  • Most of them do not recognise the truth; 21:24

  • Most of them hate the truth; 23:70

  • Most of them are transgressors; 5:32

  • Most of them do not understand; 5:103, 29:63, 49:4

  • Most of them do not know; 6:37, 7:131, 8:34, 10:55, 12:21, 12:40, 12:68, 16:38, 16:75, 16:101, 27:61, 28:13, 28:57, 30:6, 30:30, 31:25, 39:29, 39:49, 44:39, 45:26, 52:47

  • Most of them are idol worshippers; 30:42

  • Most of them do not hear or understand; 25:44

  • Most of them are ignorant; 6:111

  • Most of them are unappreciative; 2:243, 7:17, 10:60, 12:38, 27:73

  • Most of them are wicked; 7:102, 9:8

  • Most of them are liars; 26:223

  • Most of them turn away; 41:4

  • Most people insist upon disbelieving; 17:89, 25:50

  • Most people, with regard to meeting their Lord, are disbelievers; 30:8

  • Most people disbelieve in the Hour; 40:59

  • Most people are not thankful; 40:61

Let's take a moment to realize that the term 'most' has synonyms such as almost all, nearly all, the majority, etc. When God informs us that almost all the people are disbelievers, does it really make sense to accept that a group in majority will be saved? A group such as the Sunni Muslims, which includes such a vast amount of our worldly population, over 1.5 Billion people and ever increasing?

The Believers are Always Few in Number

The Quran supports the fact that there are only ever a few believers.

Satan found them readily fulfilling his expectations. They followed him, except a few believers.

~ Quran 34:20

All except a few will follow Satan:

When we said to the angels, "Fall prostrate before Adam," they fell prostrate, except Satan. He said, "Shall I prostrate to one You created from mud?" He said, "Since You have honored him over me, if You respite me till the Day of Resurrection, I will possess all his descendants, except a few."

~ Quran 17:61-62

Most people are cursed as a consequence for their disbelief:

Some would say, "Our minds are made up!" Instead, it is a curse from GOD, as a consequence of their disbelief, that keeps them from believing, except for a few of them.

~ Quran 2:88

Throughout our history, there have only ever been a few people that deserve to be saved:

If only some of those among the previous generations possessed enough intelligence to forbid evil! Only a few of them deserved to be saved by us. As for the transgressors, they were preoccupied with their material luxuries; they were guilty.

~ Quran 11:116

We made a covenant with the Children of Israel: "You shall not worship except GOD. You shall honor your parents and regard the relatives, the orphans, and the poor. You shall treat the people amicably. You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat)." But you turned away, except a few of you, and you became averse.

~ Quran 2:83

When a rumor that affects security comes their way, they spread it. Had they referred it to the messenger, and those in charge among them, those who understand these matters would have informed them. If it were not for God's grace towards you, and His mercy, you would have followed the devil, except a few.

~ Quran 4:83

They made for him anything he wanted - niches, statues, deep pools, and heavy cooking pots. O family of David, work (righteousness) to show your appreciation. Only a few of My servants are appreciative.

~ Quran 34:13

Have you noted the leaders of Israel after Moses? They said to their prophet, "If you appoint a king to lead us, we will fight in the cause of God." He said, "Is it your intention that, if fighting is decreed for you, you will not fight?" They said, "Why should we not fight in the cause of God, when we have been deprived of our homes, and our children?" Yet, when fighting was decreed for them, they turned away, except a few. God is aware of the transgressors.

~ Quran 2:246

So let's take a look at the figures in today's world. The Sunni's are a majority in most Muslim communities: in Southeast Asia, China, South Asia, Africa, and most of the Arab world. The Sunni population is roughly 1.5 Billion in number, which makes up 20% of the world population. We simply cannot classify this group as few in number!

God's Messengers

We can also learn a lesson from the history of the previous messengers. When God narrates the history of His messengers, there are only ever a few sincere believers. So how would it benefit us, for God to inform us that there are only ever a few believers within each community, throughout our entire history?

In verses 16:82-83 God informs Muhammad that the majority of the people are disbelievers that will not take heed to the message.

If they still turn away, then your sole mission is the clear delivery (of the message). They fully recognize GOD's blessings, then deny them; the majority of them are disbelievers.

~ Quran 16:82-83

Brothers Moses and Aaron were both prophets who received a scripture (21:48). We are informed only a few people believed with them:

None believed with Moses except a few of his people, while fearing the tyranny of Pharaoh and his elders. Surely, Pharaoh was much too arrogant on earth, and a real tyrant.

~ Quran 10:83

Only a few believed with David:

When Saul took command of the troops, he said, "GOD is putting you to the test by means of a stream. Anyone who drinks from it does not belong with me - only those who do not taste it belong with me - unless it is just a single sip." They drank from it, except a few of them. When he crossed it with those who believed, they said, "Now we lack the strength to face Goliath and his troops." Those who were conscious of meeting GOD said, "Many a small army defeated a large army by GOD's leave. GOD is with those who steadfastly persevere."

~ Quran 2:249

Noah was to carry all those who believed with him on the Ark, and there were only a few believers:

When our judgment came, and the atmosphere boiled over, we said, "Carry on it a pair of each kind, together with your family, except those who are condemned. Carry with you those who have believed," and only a few have believed with him.

~ Quran 11:40

At the time of Abraham, there was only one house of believers:

Have you noted the history of Abraham's honorable guests? They visited him, saying, "Peace." He said, "Peace to you, strangers!" He asked his family to prepare a fat calf. When he offered it to them, he remarked, "Do you not eat?" He harbored fear of them. They said, "Have no fear," and they gave good news of a knowledgeable son. His wife was astonished. Noting her wrinkled face: "I am a sterile old woman." They said, "Thus said your Lord. He is the Most Wise, the Omniscient." He said, "What are you up to, O messengers?" They said, "We have been dispatched to criminal people. "We will shower them with rocks of clay. "Marked by your Lord for the transgressors." We then delivered all the believers. We did not find in it except one house of Muslims.

~ Quran 51:24-36

At the time of Lot it was only his family that was saved from God's punishment, except his wife.

(The angels) said, "O Lot, we are your Lord's messengers, and these people cannot touch you. You shall leave with your family during the night, and let not anyone of you look back, except your wife; she is condemned along with those who are condemned. Their appointed time is the morning. Is not the morning soon enough?"

~ Quran 11:81

Joseph is among a minor group of believers, which is confirmed in verse 12:8 when the disbelievers say "we are in the majority."

In Joseph and his brothers there are lessons for the seekers. They said, "Joseph and his brother are favored by our father, and we are in the majority. Indeed, our father is far astray.

~ Quran 12:7-8

Will Islam dominate All Other Religions?

Contrary to all of the above information, many Sunni Muslims claim that Islam will take over the world, overtaking all other religions and becoming the main belief for nearly all of the people on earth.

But hang on a minute, God has already informed us that most people will not believe! This is not limited to any point in time. In fact, for anyone to claim that there will be more believers in the later generations as opposed to the earlier generations is failing to uphold verses 56:11-14 where God speaks of those closest to Him:

They are those who will be closest (to God). In the gardens of bliss. Many from the first generations. Few from the later generations.

~ Quran 56:11-14

There are over 70 references in this chapter, providing evidence that there are only ever a few sincere believers and that the major groups are not guided.

On the other hand, there are 3 verses that the Sunni Muslims use for their argument that Islam will dominate the world. Such are verses 9:33, 48:28 and 61:9, as follows:

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.

~ Quran 48:28

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.

~ Quran 9:33

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it.

~ Quran 61:9

Note that some have translated the word 'manifest' to mean proclaim or prevail.

In the Quran there are no contradictions. So how is it possible for the truth to prevail, whilst at the same time, most people will never be considered a believer in the sight of God? Evidently, we cannot dismiss the fact that most people will not believe, otherwise we would be proving disbelief in several verses of the Quran. So let's take a closer look at the definitions of the key words manifest, proclaim and prevail.

Definitions

- Manifest;  Clear or obvious to the eye or mind.

- Proclaim;  To announce or indicate clearly.

- Prevail;     Prove more powerful or superior (higher in rank, status, or quality).

We could only draw 3 possible conclusions to the meaning of verses 9:33, 61:9 and 48:28, depending on which English translation we refer to:

  • The messenger was sent to make the truth clear to the people over all religions;

  • The messenger announced the truth over all religion;

  • The messenger proves to have a more powerful argument when sharing the message.

Regardless of which translation we are referring to, there is still no indication that Islam will dominate the world.

  • The truth can be clear from falsehood, whilst still most people will disregard the truth. The truth would become obvious when closely comparing with false religions or sects, if one is to deeply study the truth (the Quran) to a great extent. Whether the truth is clear and obvious over all religion, or that the truth is proven more powerful, we cannot conclude from this information that Islam will take over the world where nearly everyone on earth will become believers.

  • We learn throughout the Quran that part of a messenger's duty in delivering the message involves announcing the truth to all the people, regardless of their religion. This was the same throughout the history of all the messengers, that they were to announce God's perfect religion to worship Him alone, while presenting their proofs and/or scripture to share with the people.

  • Also we know God possesses the most powerful argument (6:149), and God's Truth will always be more powerful over any false religions or sects. The believers would always prove to have a more powerful argument based on quality evidence and proofs found within the Quran. With this fact we still cannot declare the people will believe in the truth, or that Islam will take over the world.

We learn from the Quran that many people are not really believers, yet they think that they are guided:

"Some He guided, while others are committed to straying. They have taken the devils as their masters, instead of GOD, yet they believe that they are guided."

~ Quran 7:30

Anyone who disregards the message of the Most Gracious, we appoint a devil to be his constant companion. Such companions will divert them from the path, yet make them believe that they are guided.

~ Quran 43:36-37

Although verses 43:36-7 could include Christians and Jews, as they disregard the message of the Most Gracious (the Quran), the Muslim sects who do not correctly follow the Quran as it was meant to be followed are also counted.

In conclusion, those who falsely claim that almost all of the people on earth will become believers, with Islam becoming the main belief for nearly everyone on earth, is not only proving disbelief in many verses of the Quran, but also they are claiming to know the future without sufficient Quranic proof. This is described in the Quran as saying about God what you do not know, which is indeed prohibited for the believers and is nothing more than the work of Satan:

He (Satan) only commands you to commit evil and vice, and to say about GOD what you do not know.

~ Quran 2:169

Say, "My Lord prohibits only evil deeds, be they obvious or hidden, and sins, and unjustifiable aggression, and to set up beside GOD powerless idols, and to say about GOD what you do not know."

~ Quran 7:33

Verse 11:31 confirms those claiming to know the future or the unseen are considered a transgressor in the sight of God:

"I do not claim that I possess the treasures of God, nor do I know the future, nor do I claim to be an angel. Nor do I say to those despised by your eyes that God will not bestow any blessings upon them. GOD knows best what is in their innermost thoughts. (If I did this,) I would be a transgressor."

~ Quran 11:31

We must be extremely careful not to claim to know the unseen, or to say anything that is not based on solid Quranic evidence, if we care not to damage our souls.
