The Significance of Night and Day in the Quran
“Many species (including humans) need darkness to survive and thrive.”
~American Medical Association
Humans depend on the darkness just as much as we need the light
And He has also subjected the sun and the moon, ceaselessly in your service, and He subjected for you the night and the day.
Quran ~ 14:33
Navigation
Humans have been navigating by the stars since ancient times. Also a small yet diverse group of species such as moths, frogs, dung beetles and seals, navigate by the stars. The night sky guides their search for food and mates.
Migrating birds that take off at sunset rely on their magnetic compass, but also the star compass, as they can use individual stars for orientation.
And it is He who rendered for you the stars so that you would be guided by them in the darkness of the land and the sea. We have detailed the revelations for people who have knowledge.
~ Quran 6:97
Body Clock
Most life on Earth adhere to a circadian rhythm — our biological clock. It’s a sleep-wake pattern governed by the day-night cycle.
Our biological clocks are important. They interact with our body systems, changing our hormone levels and even modifying our genetic code.
He is the One who rendered the night for you to rest in, and rendered the day for seeing. Indeed, in that are signs for people who listen.
~ Quran 10:67
Labour
Most women go into labour at night. Melatonin levels rise during the evening as darkness falls. This hormone interacts with oxytocin to promote contractions and bring on labour.
Melatonin doesn’t just help trigger labour but also helps our uterine muscles to work more effectively during the final stages of birth.
In the alternation of night and day, and in what God has created in the heavens and the earth, are signs for people who are reverent.
~ Quran 10:6
Animals
Many species of animals are nocturnal: Some come out at night to escape the heat of the day. Others need the night to hunt, mate, or avoid predators.
Some species such as sea turtles and clownfish will only lay their eggs in the protection of darkness.
Insects
Half of all insect species are nocturnal. As such, they depend on darkness and light from the moon and stars for orientation and movement or to escape from predators, and to go about their nightly tasks of seeking food and reproducing.
In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, are signs for those who possess intelligence.
~ Quran 3:190
Plants
All plants require light for photosynthesis, the process within a plant that converts light, oxygen and water into carbohydrates (energy). Plants require this energy in order to grow, bloom and produce seed.
Many plants also need downtime, an absence of light, to begin seasonal growth or to produce fruit or flowers.
Periods of darkness are required for plants as it affects their metabolism. It also gives them time to stop producing food (photosynthesis) and use the huge amount of energy they've stored through the day to grow.
Have you not seen that God merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night, and that He has subjected the sun and the moon, each travelling for a specified term, and that God is All-Aware of what you do? ~ Quran 31:29
He is the One who splits the daybreak, and He rendered the night for resting, and the sun and the moon for calculation. Such is the determination of the Dignified, the Knowledgeable.
~ Quran 6:96
He is the One who rendered the night and the day in succession for those who wish to take heed or wish to give thanks.
~ Quran 25:62
Praise be to God who created the heavens and the earth and devised the darkness and the light. Yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord.
~ Quran 6:1
