The Preservation of Pharaoh's Body

Pharaoh Ramses II was the Egyptian King in the era of Prophet Moses. His body was found beside the Red Sea, in Jabalain, and is now on display in the Royal Mummies Chamber of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (Video Here).

Although the story of Pharaoh's drowning and preservation of his body was revealed in the Quran 1400 years ago, Pharaoh's body was only found 124 years ago, in 1898.

The time it takes for a human body to completely deteriorate to bones is a maximum of 50 years, but Pharaoh's age is approximately 3000 years old.

God tells us in the Quran that He preserved the body of Pharaoh as a sign to mankind.

We delivered the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them with much animosity and aggression. Then, when he was on the verge of drowning, he said, "I believe that there is no god except the One in whom the Children of Israel have believed, and I am one of the Submitters.”
~ Quran 10:90

What! Now? When you had previously rebelled and you were one of the corruptors? Today We will preserve your body so that you serve as a sign for those to come after you." Indeed, many people are oblivious of Our signs.

~ Quran 10:91-92

The preservation of Pharoah’s body is indeed a sign from God and is one of many proofs that the Quran is the Word of God.

However as God states in 10:92, many people are oblivious to His signs.

How many a sign in the heavens and the earth do they pass by, yet they turn away from them!

– Quran 12:105

Pharaoh spread much corruption in the land and turned the people into sects:

Pharaoh acted haughtily in the land, turning its people into sects and oppressing a group of them; slaughtering their children and shaming their women. He was one of the corruptors.

– Quran 28:4

He serves as a reminder and an example for subsequent generations.

We have brought down to you clarifying revelations and examples from those who passed away before you, as well as advice for the reverent.

– Quran 24:34

When they incurred Our anger, We inflicted retribution upon them and drowned them all. We made them a thing of the past and an example for the later ones.

- Quran 43:55-56

We recite to you from the news of Moses and Pharaoh truthfully for a people who believe.

~ Quran 28:3

In his story there is a great lesson as well as an example. We must not follow in his footsteps if we seek God’s favour. And it is of no benefit to call on God to be our Lord when we are near to death, as Pharoah did (10:90).

We cannot spread great corruption in the land and then expect to be saved by God.

Peace & God Bless
